Remote Assistance Solution on Realwear NavigatorÂ
Based on the Usability Research of this solution on JioGlass, we have seen in 3rd part that there were some limitations in terms of use in some highly flammable or very restricted environments. This feedback we received from RIL Jamnagar plant but assuming an Enterprise solution, it can come from other industries as well.Â
By keeping this in mind for those limitations, we redesigned the solution on the industry topper device Realwear. During primary research, we came to know that some of the industries like Oil & Gas, Automobile and Maintenance have used Realwear earlier but it doesn't cover features like per-user analytics, per-job data collection and storage for further audits etc. Also, Realwear is used in high sensitive environments as it has ATEX certification to use.
The HMT-1 has a smaller screen compared to traditional tablets or smartphones. This necessitates careful layout and prioritization of information. Thats why must ensure that essential elements are easily visible and accessible without excessive scrolling.Â
As the screen size is very small 854x480px, we made some changes in Information Architecture (IA) to reduce the cognitive load. UX Principle Progressive Disclosure was very much important while designing any app for such devices.Â
Regarding content guidelines, font sizes need to be min 20 or greater than this and make limited information/actions to keep the screen legible.Â
Any buttons/CTA's need to be in uppercase which will will help user's easily identify voice commands.Â
We have done some initial research for design guidelines of Realwear and found some important notes from the Realwear site. It has started from screen layout and information.
Actions on Screen: Making complex interfaces make it harder for user to take decisions, and especially in small screen have to keep limited actions places in peripheral view. So avoid showing too many actions placed on screen. Best way to for such situations is to group them in one master menu.
Safe Zone for Content: Main content should be placed in center of the screen for better readability. Other controls can be placed 25px from the Top, 20px from the Left and Right sides and 16px from the bottom for a 854 x 480px canvas.Â
Voice Controls: We have used the Realwear system voice commands to interaction in the Remote Assistance app. It was more accurate and worked much better in sensitive environments. Most of the system commands are not displayed upfront E.g. NEXT, BACK, SELECT.Â
Also the voice identification was struchred in such a way that if there are two words (NEXT PAGE), it will detect when you speak as two words like "NEXT - PAGE".
As the interactions are primarily on voice commands, it was important to show actual CTA in text instead of icons so that the user is aware of commands to interaction with the system.
There will be options for Field Technician to login with QR Code which will be available with user.
Scroll Up/Down will the voice commands to check all assigned Jobs.
Remote Assistance application is not only work on JioGlass or Realwear but also work as Android mobile app by considering Enterprise use case.
If was great experience to design experience for Realwear with limitations like screen size, voice commands, UI can be view only by one eye.
I didnt got opprtunity to conduct Usability studies with Realwear, but based on feedback which i checked online, it take sometime to user to get adjusted with UI. User needs initial training om how to place and use the device.Â
